Max Schmeling
First European born world heavyweight champion, knocked out Joe Louis in 1936
Overview
Schmeling won the vacant title in 1930 on a disqualification against Jack Sharkey and defended it before losing the rematch. In 1936 he scored one of boxing great upsets, knocking out the unbeaten Joe Louis in 12 rounds after spotting a tell in the Louis stance. Louis flattened him in one round in the 1938 rematch. Later he counted Louis among his friends.
