Jack Dempsey
The Manassa Mauler, heavyweight champion 1919 to 1926 and the first million dollar gate
Overview
Dempsey demolished giant Jess Willard in Toledo in 1919 to win the title and became the roaring twenties personified, drawing the first million dollar gates against Georges Carpentier in 1921 and Gene Tunney in 1926. A savage two fisted attacker with cat quick aggression, he lost the crown to Tunney, then lost again in the 1927 Long Count fight before retiring.
