Overview
Napoles left Cuba after professional boxing was banned there and built his career in Mexico City. He won the world welterweight title from Curtis Cokes in 1969, lost it on cuts to Billy Backus in 1970 and regained it the following year. He moved up to challenge Carlos Monzon for the middleweight title in 1974 and lost, then surrendered the welterweight crown to John Stracey in 1975.
