Joe Louis
The Brown Bomber, heavyweight champion for nearly 12 years with a record 25 title defenses
Overview
Louis won the title from James Braddock in 1937 and held it until 1949, making 25 successful defenses, 21 by knockout. His one round destruction of Max Schmeling in 1938 carried weight far beyond sport. After war service he returned and defended nine more times, finally losing to Ezzard Charles in 1950. He finished 66 wins and 3 losses and was laid to honor at Arlington.
