Emile Griffith
Six time world champion at welterweight and middleweight from the Virgin Islands
Overview
Griffith turned pro after working in a New York hat factory and won the welterweight title from Benny Paret in 1961. In their 1962 rematch Paret never regained consciousness and died, a tragedy that shadowed Griffith for life. He boxed on with grace, winning the middleweight crown twice more, and is remembered as one of the finest and most beloved fighters of his generation.
