Before 10,000 at the Olympic Club, bank clerk James J. Corbett knocked out the great John L. Sullivan in the 21st round of the first world heavyweight championship fought with gloves under Queensberry rules. Sullivan, unbeaten in a decade, faded against the younger man footwork and science. Corbett gave away around 30 pounds and still finished it.
